“The way we cope with trauma is far more complex than once thought, and the way it molds us is similarly complex. We bend, we break, we repair and rebuild, and often we grow, changing for the better in ways we never would have if we had not suffered.” nytimes

the risk of trial

From everything I’ve read, it seems like Dharun Ravi’s lawyer really dropped the ball on that case. His arguments, ranging from explaining Ravi was just a “stupid kid,” to denying he was homophobic, to saying he feared his computer might get stolen, seem like they would have painted a really disjointed theory of the case. Did the lack of clarity make the defense’s case seem uncredible and disingenuous to a jury?

It doesn’t seem like people expected the case to end in conviction. Ravi even turned down a plea deal of just community service! It makes me wonder about the predictability of jurys’ rulings. Maybe Ravi/Ravi’s defense team was just really overconfident and oblivious?

“In highly successful change efforts, people find ways to help others see the problems or solutions in ways that influence emotions, not just thought.”
